Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani on Sunday said he spoke last week with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo about Giuliani’s meeting with a Ukrainian official, adding that Pompeo didn’t direct him to have that meeting.
During an interview on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” the former New York City mayor said then-special US envoy to Ukraine Kurt Volker and US Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland were the ones who directed him to meet with the Ukrainians. During the interview, Giuliani was asked whether Pompeo directed him to meet with the Ukrainians. “He did not. Mr. Volker did and Mr. Sondland did. But when I talked to the secretary last week, he said he was aware of it,” Giuliani told host Margaret Brennan. A source familiar with the State Department’s contact with Giuliani previously refuted that characterization, telling CNN that Giuliani’s assertion that he was directed to contact Ukrainian officials by the State Department is “totally false.” Sondland has refused to comment on anything related to Giuliani. Volker has not responded to requests for comment about Giuliani’s statements.Read MoreVolker did set up a meeting between Giuliani and an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in what Giuliani describes as part of his effort to get Ukraine to investigate an issue related to former Vice President Joe Biden. Giuliani's journey to the center of Trump's impeachment battle started with a phone call in 2018Giuliani wanted Ukraine to investigate Biden and his son, Hunter, who was on the board of a Ukrainian natural gas company. There is no evidence of wrongdoing by Joe or Hunter Biden. Pompeo was aware that his department was assisting Giuliani in speaking with an aide to the Ukrainian president, explains a source familiar with the conversations. When asked last week about Giuliani’s efforts, Pompeo said the State Department’s actions were “appropriate.” “From what I’ve seen so far, each of the actions that were undertaken by State Department officials was entirely appropriate,” he said.Three House committees have subpoenaed Pompeo to produce documents related to Ukraine by Friday as part of an impeachment inquiry by House Democrats into Trump’s conduct.
