Chelsea Manning, the former soldier and whistleblower, is safe after sending a now-deleted tweet that sparked suicide concerns.

The tweet, posted Sunday night, included a picture of a person’s feet, with the toenails painted pink, wearing what looks like pink pajamas, standing on a ledge of a building. It read, “im sorry.”

Another now-deleted tweet read, “im sorry – i tried – im sorry i let you all down – im not really cut out for this world – i tried adapting to this world out here but i failed you – i couldn’t do this anymore – i can take people i don’t know hating me but not my own friends – i tried and i’m sorry about my failure.”

Just after midnight Monday morning, a tweet was sent from Manning’s account saying she was safe and on the phone with friends.

“thanks everyone for your concern and please give her some space,” it read.

Manning, a trans woman, was court martialed in 2013 after leaking hundreds of thousands of classified or sensitive documents to Wikileaks. Her sentence was commuted by former President Obama in 2017. Since then, she has become a high profile trans activist and recently announced her intent to run for Senate in Maryland on a platform of prison and ICE abolishment as well as free health care and transgender rights.

Manning drew the ire of many on the left in recent months, after she “crashed” a January party thrown by a group of white supremacists and far-right conspiracists, who said her presence was welcome at the party.

As ThinkProgress’s Casey Michel wrote at the time, “BuzzFeed cited one source who said that ‘while she was not there protesting, she was there in a[n] effort to bridge gaps between left and right.’ [Mike] Cernovich added that he was ‘[g]lad she stopped by. All are welcome to party with me.’ [Jack] Posobiec noted that Manning was ‘hanging out by the bar and enjoying a drink chatting with people[.]’”

Then, another photo came out of Manning with many of the same far-right characters at an “Escape the Room” event in D.C. from last December.

Chelsea Manning said she was crashing @Cernovich’s party last night but here’s a picture taken in DC before Christmas where she certainly does not appear to be crashing…@willchamberlain @JackPosobiec @CassandraRules @lucianwintrich

Manning has contested the criticism, saying that she wanted to attend as a “spy” not a “racist.”

“I made it clear that I’m here because I’m not going to back down, I’m not going to hide, I’m not afraid, I will fight you,” Manning told The Daily Beast of her attendance. “I view my presence in this event as a form of protest in and of itself because they would never allow somebody like me into a place like that.”
